The Ultimate Guide to Lanzarote Cycling

Everything you need to know for cycling in Lanzarote — mapped routes, tips, highlights, and practical advice to plan the perfect island adventure.

Hero Image

Lanzarote is the easternmost of the Canary Islands, located just 125 km off the northwest coast of Africa. Covering 845 km² and home to roughly 166,000 residents, the island combines lively resort towns with vast stretches of untouched volcanic scenery. It feels compact and accessible, yet incredibly diverse — perfect for exploring fully by bike.

Much of Lanzarote’s character comes from the massive volcanic eruptions of 1730–1736, which buried around a quarter of the island under lava and ash.

This shaped the otherworldly landscapes cyclists ride through today: black lava fields, red and ochre mountains, perfectly shaped volcanic cones, and whitewashed villages standing out against the dark terrain. It’s a cycling backdrop you won’t find anywhere else in Europe.

  • Rolling volcanic terrain creates long, steady climbs rather than steep, technical ones

  • Excellent road quality with smooth, well-maintained tarmac

  • Low to moderate traffic once you leave resort zones

When to Go

Lanzarote is one of Europe’s most reliable year-round cycling destinations.

With steady temperatures, minimal rainfall, and over 300 sunny days a year, the island offers comfortable riding conditions in every season. Even in winter, daytime temperatures remain mild, making Lanzarote a favourite for training camps and winter-sun escapes.

  • January–May: Prime season — mild, stable weather and ideal cycling conditions

  • June–August: Warm, windy, and dry — ride early and expect strong trade winds

  • September–October: Quiet roads, warm weather, great sea conditions

  • November–December: Perfect winter-sun riding with mild temps and low rainfall

Below is an overview of what to expect in each season so you can plan your trip with confidence.

Spring (March–May)

Spring is one of the best times to cycle Lanzarote. Days are warm and bright, winds are moderate, and the island’s volcanic landscapes look sharp and colourful in the clear light. It’s a great time for longer routes, steady climbs, and full island exploration.

Temperatures: 19–25 °C

Best for: All cyclists — perfect balance of warmth, daylight, and comfort

Why ride in spring:

  • Ideal temperatures for longer rides

  • Moderate trade winds

  • Clear views across volcanic landscapes

  • Great for both inland loops and coastal rides

Summer (June–August)

Summer in Lanzarote is warm, dry, and windy. The trade winds are strongest at this time, which keeps temperatures manageable but can add challenge on exposed roads. Early-morning departures are essential for enjoyable riding.

Temperatures: 26–32 °C (cooler on the coast, warmer inland)

Best for: Early riders, coastal loops, wind-training enthusiasts

Good to know:

  • Expect strong northeasterly winds

  • Start rides early to avoid heat and mid-day gusts

  • Coastal routes are breezier and more comfortable

  • Interior climbs feel hotter due to volcanic terrain reflecting heat

Autumn (September–November)

Autumn is another outstanding season for cycling Lanzarote. The winds calm down, the sea stays warm, and days remain sunny and pleasant. September is warm; October and November bring ideal riding temperatures and quieter roads.

Temperatures: 22–28 °C in early autumn, cooling to 18–24 °C by November

Best for: Riders seeking warm weather, fewer crowds, and stable conditions

Why ride in autumn:

  • Warm but comfortable temperatures

  • Reduced winds compared to summer

  • Excellent visibility for coastal and volcanic routes

  • Quieter roads and better availability in accommodations

Winter (December–February)

Winter is one of Lanzarote’s biggest advantages: while much of Europe is cold and rainy, Lanzarote stays mild, bright, and highly rideable. You can comfortably cycle almost every day, making it the go-to season for training camps.

Temperatures: 17–22 °C

Best for: Winter-sun escapes, training weeks, long steady rides

Good to know:

  • Winds can vary but temperatures remain mild

  • Occasional showers are short and infrequent

  • Ideal for coastal and mid-island routes

  • Popular period for cyclists — expect an energetic cycling atmosphere
